Blog #6
I have decided to write about the Jewish community that lived in Eastern Europe during the Holocaust. I have chosen this group because I have always been interested in pursuing more knowledge on the subject and it is within my field of study. I believe that I will be able to use texts about the group and also by texts written by people who have survived the holocaust and have written their own memoirs. I believe I will use mainly books but I will also use websites and videos to gather my information for this paper and as of right now I have a few books in mind to start off my paper but I am still developing my overall thesis for this paper.

Matt,
ReplyDeleteI think this is a really interesting idea however, I'm a little apprehensive about it. It can be hard to do discourse analysis on something that was written in a time and culture that you are not a part of. I do, however, like that you're finding a way to connect it to your major and other interests.
My suggestion would be to pick either primary texts from that time. (Like newspaper articles or some sort of government documents, for example) or pick primary texts by Jews living in a particular area. The key, is that you're not going to want your texts to be very long, so something like an entire book or an entire memoir would be way too much to analyze. Since you need to have at least three, you'll want to keep the text pretty short.
I look forward to workshopping with you and the group on this paper Matt. This is a topic that I have a lot of interest in too and I have taken a few courses over this area of history. If you need any help finding the sources I could possibly help you out a bit with the texts and perhaps get you in contact with one of my professors that I took a course from.
